On Friday night, the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists presented their annual Excellence in Journalism Awards.

I’m honored and thrilled to announce that Sugar + Shake received the award for “Best Hawaii Features Blog”! This was the first year that SPJ Hawaii included this category, so it’s even more exciting to have scored the win.

The comments from the judges were quite flattering:

This blog wins the category because of its amazing photography and ability to make my stomach growl. It’s also nicely written, with just the right casual touch for a blog but packed with enough information to make it a must-read. Loved this blog.

That means a lot to me, since the reason I’m such a slow poster is because I spend so much time obsessing over my writing and processing photos.

Kudos also go to Catherine Toth of The Cat Dish, who received the Finalist Award in the same category. Cat always blows me away with her ability to put up a post every day that makes me hungry, learn something or think more about my life. (And she’s been an incredibly encouraging friend and fellow blogger!)

Finally, thank you to those of you who’ve stuck with me over the past year and told me you’ve enjoyed Sugar + Shake and that I should keep at it — and especially to Shake, who’s always my biggest cheerleader and supporter, and the one who urged me to enter the contest in the first place. You’re the best!

*And the copy editor in me just can’t let this go: “1-peron site”?!?
