Sugar + Shake are unabashed carnivores. However, for a number of reasons, we’ve decided to try going meatless one dinner per week. This Monday was our first stab at it—tho’ I dunno, you don’t need to do much stabbing when it’s just veg on the plate… (And in case you’re wondering, we’re not jumping on board the Meatless Monday train, it just happened that this was the first day in about two weeks that I’ve cooked, none of the fish or meat options at the market were doing it for me, and I hadn’t defrosted anything. We have no plans to designate a specific day the “day of no meat.”)
I sort of sprang the whole “let’s start the meatless meal thing now” on Shake. I had the day off, so when he came home, it was all, “What’s for dinner?”
“Food.”
“What kind of food?”
“Good food.” (This is annoying, I know, but my parents did it to me ALL THE TIME.)
“Is there no meat in here?”
“…”
Fifteen minutes later, we had dinner. That is the nice thing about this non-meat thing…cooks pretty fast! It was pretty tasty. Flavor-wise, we didn’t miss the meat at all. I did wake up kind of hungry, but that could have been completely unrelated.
Tofu, asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, onions and a LOT of garlic stir-fried in a black bean and to ban jian sauce.
Stay tuned to see how this once-a-week no-meat thing goes!
